Located on Venice’s Grand Canal, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection is one of Europe’s premier museums devoted to modern art. With masterpieces ranging in style from Cubism and Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism, the collection has become one of the most respected and visited cultural attractions in Venice. 

Housed in the former residence of Peggy Guggenheim, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, located on the Grand Canal in Venice, showcases Peggy Guggenheim’s Collection. This collection is one of Europe’s foremost museums focusing on Modern art, from the first half of the 20th century. The museum presents Peggy Guggenheim’s personal collection of masterpieces from the Gianni Mattioli Collection, the Nasher Sculpture Garden, as well as temporary exhibitions covering stylings in Cubism, Expressionism, Abstract and Surrealism.
At the age of twenty-three, Peggy Guggenheim moved to Europe and spent much of her life among the avant-garde artists of the time, until the Nazis occupied France. Upon returning to New York, she exhibited her wondrous collection in the gallery “The Art of this Century,” this is when she began acting as financier for the painter Jackson Pollock. At the end of the war, she moved to Venice, a city that neither understood nor embraced her.

Ms. Guggenheim described herself and an art addict that invested her money and energies to supporting young artists. Works of the foremost art movements in Europe and in the US are on display in this museum here in Venice. The collection features works by Picasso, Braque, Kandinsky, Chagall, Max Ernst, Pollock and more, including Mattioli’s collection of futurist masterpieces: a perfect collection for a very extravagant and original art collector and dealer. The location was her final dwelling before her passing in 1979.
